PASTURE
AGRONOMY
To produce the pasture seed quality standards that Riverslea
Seeds is renowned for, a planned approach to all aspects of
the pasture growth is required. An outline of the more important
practices that are performed on the pastures in producing
the pasture seed follows.
IRRIGATION
Plant water requirements are measured through a combination
of soil water measuring instruments and daily evaporation
figures. This then determines the amount and regularity of
irrigation to be applied in order to produce a seed crop not
limited by water at critical stages of its life. All of our
crops are watered using overhead irrigation systems, either
centre pivots or lateral moves.
NUTRITION
A regular program of soil testing and pasture testing is undertaken
on Riverslea. The information gathered from these samples
is then used to determine the pastures’ nutritional
requirements. These nutrients are added at times best suited
to the pastures’ needs to produce a seed product with
all the necessary nutrients for a healthy vigorous start when
sown.
PEST
MANAGEMENT
All fields are kept clean of invasive weeds, damaging insects
and destructive diseases. The production climate in Central
Queensland is not conducive to many pests of pasture seeds,
however, we do maintain a strict policy of crop scouting to
prevent this from occurring.
HARVESTING
Delivering a consistent product to the customer requires the
harvesting operation be performed at the optimum time with
the proper machine set up in the correct configuration. This
requires experienced and diligent operators. Riverslea Seeds
uses only the best machines for harvesting so as to deliver
a product with the highest germination possible.
